Introduction
My name is Christopher Picado, and this is my final report for the WP Credits program. During this program, I worked on translating the WordPress.org website into Spanish (Costa Rica). My goal was to help make WordPress more accessible to Spanish-speaking users in Costa Rica by providing translations that are clear, natural, and appropriate for the local audience.
This experience gave me the opportunity to contribute to an international open-source project while learning more about localization, translation, and the WordPress community. In this report, I will describe my contributions, the challenges I faced, the skills I developed, and what I learned throughout the program.
Teams and Projects I Contributed To
My main project was contributing to the Spanish (Costa Rica) translation of WordPress.org. This work involved helping adapt website content so that Costa Rican users could understand it more easily in their native language.
Translation is not simply about replacing English words with Spanish words. It also involves understanding the original meaning, maintaining consistency, and choosing expressions that sound natural to the intended audience. For this reason, I aimed to make the content understandable while respecting the original message and purpose of the website.
Through this project, I learned more about the importance of localization in making open-source software and its resources accessible to people from different countries and linguistic backgrounds.
Learning Resources
During the project, I used WordPress resources to learn more about the platform and its translation community.
Some useful resources include:
- WordPress.org: The official WordPress website and the main platform related to my project.
- Translate WordPress: The platform used by the WordPress community to translate WordPress projects into different languages.
- Make WordPress: A resource for learning about the different teams and collaborative projects within the WordPress community.
- WordPress.org Support Forums: A place to explore questions and answers related to WordPress.
These resources helped me better understand the WordPress ecosystem and the role that community contributions play in improving the experience of users around the world.
Challenges and Solutions
One challenge of translating website content is finding the right words and expressions for the target audience. Some English phrases cannot be translated literally without sounding unnatural in Spanish. To address this, I focused on understanding the meaning of the original text before choosing the most appropriate Spanish wording.
Another challenge was maintaining consistency throughout the translation process. Different expressions can sometimes communicate the same idea, but using inconsistent terminology can confuse readers. Paying attention to context and using consistent translations helped me work toward a more unified experience for Spanish-speaking users.
A further challenge was understanding how contributions fit into a larger open-source project. WordPress is maintained through collaboration between people from different backgrounds and countries. Learning about this process helped me understand the importance of following project guidelines, communicating clearly, and being open to feedback.
These challenges showed me that successful localization requires both language skills and a willingness to learn from others.
My Contributions

Key Learnings From the WP Credits Program
One of my main takeaways from the WP Credits program is that open-source projects depend on contributions from people with different skills. Programming is not the only way to contribute to technology. Translation and localization are also important because they help more people access and understand digital tools.
Another important lesson was that localization requires more than linguistic accuracy. Translators must consider context, terminology, and the needs of the people who will use the final product. A translation should communicate the original meaning while sounding natural to its intended audience.
Finally, I learned about the importance of collaboration. Large projects such as WordPress depend on people sharing knowledge, following common guidelines, and working toward a common goal. Being part of this process helped me better understand how open-source communities operate.
New Skills Gained
Throughout the WP Credits program, I developed and strengthened several skills.
Technical and project-related skills:
- Understanding the WordPress translation and localization process.
- Using online resources to explore WordPress projects.
- Learning how localized content contributes to the overall user experience.
- Understanding the importance of terminology and consistency in website translation.
Communication and personal skills:
- Improving my attention to detail.
- Developing problem-solving skills when translating difficult expressions.
- Understanding the importance of collaboration in open-source projects.
- Becoming more comfortable learning independently and working toward a project goal.
These skills will be useful not only for future WordPress contributions but also for other projects involving technology, language, and communication.
Personal Reflections and Next Steps
One of the most interesting aspects of this experience was discovering how people can contribute to a global project without necessarily writing code. Translating WordPress.org into Spanish (Costa Rica) allowed me to work on a project that connects technology with language and accessibility.
I also gained a better understanding of the work involved in making digital resources available to people from different linguistic backgrounds. Even small translation improvements can help users understand information more clearly and feel more comfortable using a platform.
After the WP Credits program, I would like to continue learning about WordPress and explore opportunities to contribute to its translation community. I also hope to improve my localization skills and gain more experience collaborating with open-source contributors.
Overall, the WP Credits program has been an opportunity to learn, contribute, and understand the value of community-driven projects. I am glad I had the chance to work on making WordPress.org more accessible to Spanish-speaking users in Costa Rica, and I hope to continue developing these skills in the future.
Conclusion
My experience with the WP Credits program helped me understand that meaningful contributions to open source can take many forms. Through my work translating WordPress.org into Spanish (Costa Rica), I learned more about localization, collaboration, and the importance of making technology accessible to a wider audience.
This project has been a valuable learning experience, and I hope to build on what I have learned by continuing to participate in the WordPress community.
